8/16/2015 – 8/20/2015: Lily Basin Trailhead to Packwood Lake Trailhead via Heart Lake, Goat Lake, Cispus Basin, Old Snowy Mountain, Lost Lake and Packwood Lake. This was a wonderful backpacking trip with my son Gary. We saw mountain goats, beautiful lakes, high peaks, an incredibly fast-hiking group of teenage girls, elk, and enjoyed a trip that had been on my
radar for quite some time.
You can read all about this trip in the writeup, Five Days in Goat Rocks Wilderness.
- 36.0 miles loop – two cars required
- Difficulty: Hard
- Elevation range: 2751' to 7204' gross: +9638'
- Traffic: Light
- Getting There: Taking a front wheel drive car to Lily Basin Trailhead can be problematic because of a short but very steep rise in the road. We couldn’t make it in the Honda Fit, but were fine in the 4-wheel drive truck. Gary had to run up the trail to get the truck when we finished the trip. He was in very good shape. At least take an all-wheel drive rig to get to Lily Basin
Trailhead. Parking at Lily Basin Trailhead is basically a wide spot in the road.
- Trail Obstacles: Up and down. Loose scree. Boulders. Glacier crossings. Use Trekking Poles!
- Fees: Parking permits required at Packwood Lake Trailhead.
